2018 Library Staffing Comparison by Board Member District

Notes for the Staffing Analyses
  • The staffing numbers that appear on each candidate's page following are based on numbers reported in in 2015-16, and then in Fall 2019.
  • The list of schools included in this report are those reported in the school listings under each board district on the HISD website. In school listings, multi-level schools are listed twice, under elementary, under middle school, or under high school.
Example: Sharpstown International in District 6 has grades 6-12 and is listed under middle and high schools. The paraprofessional in that school is counted under both schools, but there is only one person holding the position.
  • In previous reports, we referred to vacancies rather than closed libraries. We feel that vacancy is misleading term because these closed libraries are not advertising for a library position. Few library positions are advertised over the year on the HISD jobline.

Staffing definitions:
Librarian – holds a school library and teacher certification
Teacher – has teacher certification
Paraprofessional – individuals who are classified as clerks, hourly lecturers, volunteers, etc.

Vacant - HISD declares that this job is available, whether it is posted or not, and whether it has been filled at all in  recent years. Some "vacancies" persist for 3-5 years while students go without library services.

Closed – no one is staffing the library; no services are provided; the collection is not being maintained
No Library – a circulating library with a collection has not been established on a campus or the campus is not served by HISD Library Services (Example: charter schools)
