Houston ISD School Board District VIII

Judith Cruz (elected 2019) - President 2022
District VIII Library Staffing in Overview. On the left, 2018-present. On the right, a pie chart of current staffing for District VIII schools. 47% of District VIII schools have no library service in 2021, leaving 5408 students without access to a school library to learn the inquiry and research skills they will need for college, or even life. Specifically, 100% of Middle Schools have NO library access.
Picture
This is the same data presented as raw numbers, as percent of the Board district, and as a pie chart graph. That gray/black nearly-half represents 5408 students - as you can see in the table below. Also note that EVERY middle school student is included in the gray/black area.

The two images below offer library staffing details by school from 2018-present.

Staffing definitions:
Librarian – holds a school library and teacher certification
Teacher – has teacher certification
Paraprofessional – individuals who are classified as clerks, hourly lecturers, volunteers, etc.
Vacant - HISD declares that this job is available, whether it is posted or not.

No Library – the library has been vacant of staff for at least 2 years, a circulating library with a collection has not been established on a campus or the campus is not served by HISD Library Services (Example: charter schools).
The map should be considered thought-provoking rather than exactly true in 2021. The data is from 2015-16, but the staffing patterns have not changed dramatically. We are working on an updated version (Sept 2021).
