These "BIG TAKEAWAY" statements summarize the data in the graph to the left and on the 2024 HISD Library Status by HISD Management Divisions page.
Under current leadership, HISD students are losing out on many things, but SCHOOL LIBRARIES is our focus here. BIG TAKEAWAY #1 - For every year of NES in HISD, the number of students who will never experience a K-12 school library or librarian will increase. Students who have access to functioning K-12 libraries have greater chances for success in higher education. NES and HISD leadership are decreasing those chances.
BIG TAKEAWAY #2 - In 2024, only 70 of 273 schools have any library staff, certified or not. BIG TAKEAWAY #3 - That is only 26% of HISD schools compared to 88% in 2022. BIG TAKEAWAY #4 - The Poverty Map at the left illustrates that the students without library access are largely in under-resourced communities. The numbers are even worse now as school begins. |
