Students Need Libraries in HISD - Our Mission
Every Houston ISD student deserves a full-time certified school librarian and a fully-stocked library. SNL consistently advocates on behalf of school libraries to the Elected Trustees, Board of Managers, administration, certified library staff, and you, their community of stakeholders. We think there will be 142 HISD schools without access to a library for the 2024-2025 school year. The numbers are still changing but campus budgets even non-NES have been cut to the bone.
The videos below illustrate the many facets of strong school libraries as stated by principals and other school administrators, teachers, and even HISD students.

Principals Know: School Librarians are the Heart of the School was crowdsourced by Dr. Judi Moreillon and Dr. Teresa Starrett using funds provided by the Texas Library Association, Demco, and the Dean's Research Funds (College of Professional Education, Texas Woman's University). This video from the Washington Library Association was published in early 2013. HISD school libraries could and should look like these! Funding is not stronger in Washington state, but priorities are different.
